Widespread public disturbances, including looting, burglary, and rioting began in parts of England earlier this month, following a fatal shooting of 29-year-old man by officers of the Metropolitan Police Service on August 6.

More than 1,100 people have been arrested, with riots spreading to other parts of England, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Bristol, and Medway, according to reports.

Riot (Damages) Act 1886

Compensation can be claimed under the Riot (Damages) Act from police authorities where individuals or organisations suffer damage to houses, shops, or buildings—or the property in such buildings as a result of a riot.

The 14-day deadline for claims made under the Act has been extended to 42 days, as of August 11.

Individuals and organisations may bring a claim under the Act regardless of whether they are insured in whole or in part.  Insurers may also bring a subrogation claim under the Act.
